Attention as a Superpower?

Attention as a Superpower?

How do you feel about your level of distraction? Do you feel positive about it? Is it a negative topic of discussion for you? Do you wish you had more focus? Less?

It hasn't always been safe to talk about attention deficit, but these days, everyone I've met is willing to share their difficulties with attention. So often (lack of) attention is seen as a problem state with limited solutions.

But what if we turned our focus, (ha, get it?), in a different direction? What if we paused and pondered the magnificent gift of attention? Have you ever thought about how cool it is that we can somehow place our attention effortlessly on something that, say, interests us?

And how about the times we don't even have to try to focus. The times we can simply be focused on something beautiful or loud or pleasant - without us even trying. And, what if, from this perspective, we just sat and marveled at this wonderful human gift called attention?

(sitting and marveling)

Maybe there isn't a lack of attention, as the word deficit implies? Maybe for some of us, we've got too much attention on our attention? Like maybe we notice our thinking more than the average human?

What if the ability to focus is a miraculous, automatic superpower we've inherited as humans - we just don't know how to use it?

I wonder if it would be more helpful for us to think of attention as movement? Like the movement of our breath or heart? Maybe attention is a perfect movement that doesn't need us to control it. Now, I'm not saying we should just let our attention roam free all the time, but what if free floating attention is just another part of life's natural performance? Focused in and then out, in, and out. Just like breath.

If it was, could we be okay with catching ourselves unfocused? Could we find it interesting instead of problematic? Personally, I don't think we are supposed to be focused all the time. Is that even possible? Sounds exhausting if you ask me.

But I get it, we'd like to be more focused when we want and for as long as we want. That makes sense. We have tasks to finish, things to do, and people to connect with.

Well, the good news is that with the right skills and a little bit of motivation, we can harness the superpower of attention skills. Now, if only we could focus...look, it's a squirrel!

I'm going to leave you to ponder this post for a little while. And, hey, see where your attention takes you. Just for funsies. Maybe right now it's automatically moved to a sensation in your body. Maybe your attention is focused on a thought like, "What the heck is she talking about?"

Or maybe, just maybe, your superpower is off and running without you noticing where it is at all. In that case, see if you can find it.

In any case, if you're interested in harnessing the power of your superpower, place your attention on booking an intro session.  :)

I'm happy to help you turn your attention woes into attention wows.
